    To do today

    Make cake

Mow lawn this evening when it's cooler and there isn't a sleeping cat to be disturbed and my feet aren't going "aaarrgh, heat!"

Weigh some things for EBay, since it's no listing fees tomorrow and Sunday for fixed price listings

    More about the laptop...

When my sister asked "Would you like my old laptop?" she didn't actually mention that the wireless card no longer worked. I'm not sure what she thought I was going to use it for without the wireless card...
When it arrived, she mentioned on the phone about the wireless card. She sent me an e-mail with a link to Amazon to a wireless dongle.
Unfortunately, said dongle comes with its driver on a disc, and that disc is a teeny thing that the laptop's slide-in drive can not use. (The disc slides in, there is no tray).
Sister suggested I put the disc in main computer and copy it to either a USB or a CD. I was doubtful that this would work. It didn't.
Sister suggested I go online to find the driver. I went to RalinkTech and found the most likely looking one. I downloaded it onto a USB stick. Drivers on USB stick wouldn't work with the Ralink dongle.
I attempted to download it onto a CD. CD burner wouldn't write it.

Ralink dongle now about to be returned to Amazon.

As I said before, I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, it was nice of my sister to give her old laptop, and I'm grateful to her for thinking of me. I'm now trying not to feel I've been given a present with nothing in the box.

Tomorrow, I'll look for another dongle. If they don't all use tiny discs, that is...

I have a new laptop. Well, when I say new, I mean new to me...it's actually about nine years old and it's my sister's old one.

The virus checker has been replaced and run and found two issues, now dealt with. Apparently the wi-fi card no longer works so a dongle is on its way. Next step is to get that up and running, and then get mIRC set up on it too hopefully.

It's very old and heavy, and of course since it belonged to my sister, it has cardiology stuff on it that has to be deleted. But it's free!

Donna Summer and Robin Gibb. Two disco legends within a week of each other. They both contributed a lot to music, and they'll both be missed

    Virus Checker Question
If you've just been given an old laptop whose antivirus software has lapsed since the laptop hasn't been used for ages, how do you go about downloading new antivirus software safely?

I've just arrived back from [info]rpdom and [info]mrs_tribble's wedding :-) (Well, from Chelmsford - the wedding was yesterday). It was a lovely day, the wedding went smoothly, Gemma looked beautiful in her long red dress with a sparkly bolero, and Dom looked very smart in his suit. They both looked very happy :-)

More about the day when I'm less knackered...with photos, after the happy couple themselves have seen them and shown them to people :-)

Last night I went to see Avenue Q with [info]the_hunter. We both had a great time:-) I would thoroughly recommend this musical to anyone who hasn't seen it and likes a good bit of adult humour :-) (For anyone who hasn't heard of it, have a look on Wikipedia)
I managed to avoid singing along to the songs, although it was a close thing with 'The Internet Is For Pr0n' *g*
My dodgy right ear had chosen yesterday to start playing up, so in the interval I had to stand with my left ear pointing Hunterwards and the right one going "Okay, I hear nothing, what's going on?" but that was the only fly in the ointment.
The woman working the 'Kate' character looked almost exactly like my old Boss (but wasn't). That took me aback for a moment! "Blimey, that's Mona, she's come up in the world a bit then..." I was impressed at how deeply the people working the characters got into their parts - they weren't just there to wave their arms around, they were acting as hard as the people playing the human characters. I think the guy playing a world-weary washed-up Gary-Coleman-from-Different-Strokes was best.
I plan to try and get to see Mitch Benn and other worthies at the Distraction Club in a month or two, having had them recommended by many friends. (Plus, lots of afpers I know and like go there, which is another good reason to visit:-)

I'm just going to put out this PSA:

Livejournal Scrapbook is going away and will be replaced by the mysterious "Photo Album". Your 10GB of Paid Member space is now 2GB. If you care, there is an explanation in Russian on the Russian news page. There's also a user-submitted translation.

+ You will no longer have access to your Scrapbook once this goes live.
+ Your images will redirect to Photo Album, but the URL will be different.
+ Friends-only and custom security settings will default to private and have to be changed back manually.
+ Unable to tell what will happen to any photos you have that put you over the 2GB limit.
+ Back up your Scrapbook just in case.
+ If you want your photos transferred over now instead of waiting, let them know here.

On the anniversary of the Titanic disaster...
Commemorating the disaster itself, since it's one hundred years and lots of people were killed - that's fair enough. However, buying Titanic merchandise and dressing up as someone from 1912 and staging a cruise to recreate the voyage of the ship itself - to me, that's obscene. Too many people see the Titanic disaster as movie fodder, not as a horrific disaster which has already been romanticised far too much over the years.

Diving the wreck itself...I'm not sure how I feel about that. The wreck itself has something to offer history, I suppose, in the same way as the Mary Rose did. So I'm not so much against that.

On the news last night, it showed people throwing wreaths and flowers in the water and shedding tears over a disaster that happened a hundred years ago. Now, if those people had relatives who were killed in the Titanic, and especially if they're old enough to remember those people, then that's fair enough and understandable. But if those people have nothing to do with the Titanic at all, besides being a bit too in love with the story (not to mention those parts of the supposed story that never actually happened, but are just tales that have grown up around the whole thing due to Hollywood)...

Well, maybe I'm a grumpy old git. In this case, though, I think I'm quite pleased to embrace my grumpy-git-hood.

Had a spare ten minutes before lunch so I looked on EBay for a possible dress to wear to the Discworld Convention Gala Dinner. All the Monsoon ones seem to have high waists, which is incredibly unflattering on me - makes me think "Where has my waist gone?". And they're too expensive too. I'll have a look at other makes but I think I'll probably wear the long skirt I got in Monsoon sale last year, with a black or blue top.

Also on the Discworld Convention, looking into going on the train rather than parental lift there and back this time. It's a long way for them to drive and one of the roundabouts gets Dad really annoyed

I've been digitising tapes. Eighties tapes, twenty-five years old. That's why I currently have Sly and Robbie, Al Jarreau and Booker Newbury in my head :-)

When will people learn that two authors with the same name do not equal the same author? Yes, I've found Family Bites being attributed to the American psychic Lisa Williams. Again.

I have a mental list of things I've done in my life that I'm proud of. FB is one of them. It's a little-known and insignificant book, I am well aware of that. But seeing it attributed to other people makes me really annoyed. *I* wrote it! The psychic Lisa Williams didn't write it while she was talking to the dead or whatever she does!

I know it's not people's fault, that they put two and two together, but really, anyone who's heard of the other Lisa Williams should work out that she probably doesn't write about werewolves and stuff in her spare time...
